Joined the Philadelphia Orchestra at 19 and studied at the Curtis Institute and formed his own band called "The Top Hatters" in 1937 . the following year he started touring.
BIG BAND HISTORY FROM 1890'S TO 1970'S. On this page we will attempt to bring Light to the History of the Big Band Era. I know there are volumes of History written of the Big Band Era. My main purpose is to preserve the music. For out of this era a generation of new music came. Like, Jazz, Blues, Rock and Roll, Pop, Rhythm and Blues.etc. You will hear this called "The Great Song Book" or the "The American Song Book" for it's "Uniquely 20th Century America".
